Rodney Cotten holds certifications in Project Management and is a licensed Community Association Manager with an MBA in Management, BS in Computer Information Systems, and AA in Database Technology. His experience, knowledge and education have established a foundation of expertise including project management, strategic planning, purchasing and operations management, budgeting and fiscal forecasting and monitoring, event management and non-profit management. He possesses over 25 years of delivering superlative customer experiences in the retail, communications, and healthcare industries. His experience includes 16 years in non-profit organizations with experience in patient education and awareness, research advocacy, fundraising, mentoring, and providing information on access to education grants and scholarships. Rodney is also a veteran of the United States Armed Forces, having served in the Navy as a Submarine Sonar Technician.
During his 14-year career at the American Urological Association (AUA), the premier urologic association which provides invaluable support to the urologic community with over 22,000 members worldwide, Rodney worked as the Research Programs and Events Manager at the AUA and the Urology Care Foundation, the official foundation of the AUA. He provided superior project management over complex and concurrent (as many as 20) projects, including symposia, conferences and other events, each with different requirements and involving a variety of internal and external stakeholders. Rodney also played a key role in creating over 25 research endowments and funds, increasing the AUA research portfolio at least 25-fold in the last ten years. He also helped to create major and impactful initiatives including the Early Career Investigators Workshop, which had a 35:1 return on investment in helping young investigators compete for federal research funding and the Urology Research Conferences Advisory Board, which brought together 11 urology research and specialty societies to share ideas and collaborate to improve research education offering for urologists and researchers. Rodney also had primary responsibility for the annual research department budget of up to $12 million.
Prior to the AUA, Rodney worked in retail and communications with Fortune 500 companies, including Jiffy Lube and ATT. He held positions as a retail Store Manager and then Purchasing and Inventory Control Coordinator for over 200 Jiffy Lube stores. During the period, he developed databases to ensure JIT delivery for store supplies and increased inventory efficiencies by identifying $650,000 in unused store inventory. With ATT (then Tele-Communications, Inc.), Rodney was Customer Service Manager and later Telemarketing Manager in the then-burgeoning satellite television division of the company. In all of these positions, his responsibilities in included front-line customer service, employee hiring and training, and meeting the established sales and customer service metrics established by each of these companies.
Rodney lives in Orlando, Florida with his wife and daughter. He also gives of his time to volunteer in the community and has received awards for his community service work. He has served on the Board of Directors of his homeowners’ association. He is a past secretary and vice-president with the Central Florida chapter of the National Black MBA Association. Rodney and his wife have served a “Bigs” for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Florida.
